From the Principal
May 2009
Greetings to All,
Can you believe that the end of the year is rapidly approaching? Field trips are winding down. The fifth grade will enjoy their DARE pizza lunch, and can't wait for the Downtown Chicago field trip, the picnic, and participating in the Track Meet. Awards will be in the afternoon of June 4th. The next step for fifth grade is Prairie View. Their journey continues.
The week of May 3rd is Teacher Appreciation Week. I am so grateful to have such a caring and wonderful staff. Your children are very lucky to have teachers who work so hard to help them learn.
All parents are encouraged to contribute to and attend International Day and the Art Fair on May 8th. Please share family recipes, special clothing articles, and other items that are special to your culture. You are welcome to visit Fernway's classrooms and Commons area to view all the International Day activities and displays from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on May 8th. You, along with the staff and students help make it successful. We always look forward to the halls decorated for Fine Arts Week.
Congratulations to our Beginning Band Students; the concert was terrific. Good luck to Matthew, Amanda, Ben, Kristian, Mohan and Malik who will be participating in the Math Bowl. The Kindergarten students will have fun at their first skating party May 13th and the MOM's Prom on May 11th.
Good Luck to Fernway’s Spelling Bee champions Anthony Krotiak and Dalia Shelby who will compete in the District Spelling Bee this month.
Continue to read to and with your children over the summer. They need to see you reading, so that they know that it is the "cool" thing to do. Take your children to museums, the public library, the zoos, and different sites in and around the city. Have fun! Continue with your own "Everyday Math" program at home. Have your students calculate mileage, measure ingredients when cooking, estimate prices when shopping and practice their math facts. In the remaining weeks of school, students need to continue to complete assignments, respect one another, and play carefully on the playground.
Thanks to all of you for your support and in making the 2009-2010 school year a successful one. Have a wonderful summer! See you in August!
